Built and first opened in 1988 by Reco Land Corp/Roy Crummer, the Malibu Colony Plaza fully opened in the summer of 1989. Malibu Bay/Jerry Perenchio and the Konheim family took over ownership and then sold Malibu Colony Plaza to E. Stanley Kroenke in June of 2005.
AUGUST 8, 2005 SHHHHH! IT’S PAPARAZZI SEASON
On Aug. 8, 2005, photographer Brian Diaz was hit in the thigh by a pellet as he was staking out a baby shower held for Britney Spears. The Lost Hills Station of the L.A. County Sheriff promised a fast investigation of the incident while Frank Griffin, one of the founders of the Bauer-Griffin photo agency, whined in the L.A. Times: “It doesn’t matter if it’s an AK-47, a Bazooka or a BB gun. The guy got shot. Even if the guy was trespassing, I don’t know whether you Americans then think it’s OK to shoot them.”

NOV. 12, 2005: MALIBU HIGH GRADUATES KEITH PATRICK NAYLOR AND TYLER LOVE ARE KILLED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT ON PCH
DEC. 12, 2005: PURCHASE OF CHILI COOK-OFF LAND
The City Council approves the purchase contract with Malibu Bay Company and offers Certificates of Participation to fund part of the purchase. The purchase of the Chili Cook-Off land is funded with $18 million worth of COPs, $2.5 million in Santa Monica College Measure S bond money, a $2.5 million grant from the State Water Resources Control Board, $2.2 million raised through private donations, $1 million from the Malibu general fund and a $700,000 grant from L.A. County for a total of $26.9 million to purchase the future site of Legacy Park.
